A pallet of expensive stock disappears overnight. The CCTV cameras captured nothing. Access records show that only a handful of employees entered the warehouse, yet every one of them insists they know nothing about the loss. The employer is left with unanswered questions, growing financial losses, and a workforce becoming increasingly suspicious of one another.
It is in situations like these that many employers begin asking about polygraph testing.
For some, the polygraph is viewed as the quickest way to identify the guilty employee. Others dismiss it entirely, believing it has no place in South African labour law. The reality, however, is far more nuanced. Polygraph examinations have earned a legitimate place in workplace investigations, but only when employers understand both their value and their limitations.
