For many employers, Employment Equity only becomes a priority when annual reporting deadlines approach.
The Employment Equity Plan is pulled from last year's files, the committee is called together, reports are submitted, and the process is forgotten until the following year.
Unfortunately, that approach can place employers at significant risk.
The Department of Employment and Labour continues to place greater emphasis on Employment Equity compliance, inspections and enforcement. As a result, employers should no longer ask whether they submitted their annual report—they should ask whether they would be ready if a labour inspector arrived tomorrow.
Submitting an Employment Equity report does not automatically mean your business is compliant.
