Politics in the Workplace: Where Do Employers Draw the Line?

Election season often brings more than campaign posters and political debates—it also finds its way into the workplace.

Lunchroom conversations become heated, employees arrive wearing political party regalia, workplace WhatsApp groups fill with campaign messages, and managers begin receiving complaints about employees canvassing during working hours or alleging unfair treatment because of their political views.

It raises an important question for employers:

Can politics be banned from the workplace?

The short answer is no—but employers are entitled to regulate workplace conduct where political activity affects productivity, discipline, safety or the rights of other employees.
